frequently asked questions

What are your hats made of?

Our hats are made of the highest quality fur felts available.  We work with two mediums, Beaver or Rabbit felt. These felts have been being used in millinery work since the 15th and 16th century to build the finest heirloom hats.

Beaver Fur

Considered the gold standard for a custom hat, the naturally occurring oils in the fur make this hat extremely durable and highly water resistant, it is well suited for heavy wear and weather.  A well made Beaver felt hat can last up to 100 years.  It is an investment that will last you a lifetime and an heirloom piece your children will be fighting over.

Rabbit Fur

Is highly durable and far more superior to wool.  Because it does not felt as tightly knit as beaver it does not have the same water repellency, however it maintains its shape well and  holds up to the elements, and the final finish is very comparable to beaver.  A durable hat that will last you decades.

Can I get my hat wet?

Yes!  Beaver felt is naturally water repellant. However, if your hat is saturated for an extended period of time  it may need to be reshaped.  Beaver blend and Rabbit felt both stand up to rain and moisture well. It is important to remember that if your hat gets really saturated to store it in a neutral environment to dry. Do not put your hat on or near any heat source, this will cause it to shrink.

How long does a custom hat take?

Currently our lead times are anywhere from 1-3 months depending on the materials you choose for your hat.

Why is a custom hat so expensive?

Custom hat making has made a comeback in the past decade.  The skills used to build a hat are centuries old and have been passed down from one hatter to another.  The materials required to made a quality heirloom piece are expensive and in high demand. Due to universal supply chain and back orders many of these materials are difficult to get and have long wait times.  Our hats are slowly and meticulously handcrafted using the finest materials available.  They are made by one person in our little studio on Orcas Island.  One hat can take anywhere from 3-5 days to make.  If you purchase a custom hat from us  you are getting a truly one of a kind piece, made to your exact specifications, handmade with love and intended to last you a lifetime.  A quality custom hat is an investment.

Can I get a hat if I don't live nearby?

Yes!  We have a custom "fit kit" that we mail out to you containing instructions and all the materials needed to get an accurate measurement and the shape of your head.  Once you send the kit back we will begin the design process.

How do I take care of my hat?

  • Use a lint roller or a horse hair hat brush to remove any dust or debris that collects on the hat.
  • Brush your hat. Brush counter clock wise on the top side and clockwise on the bottom side.
  • Do not leave your hat in your car or on your dash board. The warmth and heat will shrink/distort your hat.
  • Store your hat by hanging it on a hook, make sure the brim is unobstructed. Store flat brims brim side down on a flat surface. Store shaped brims upside down resting on the crown.
  • Your hat is not crushable, do not pack it in a suitcase. When traveling use the carrying box provided or wear it on your head.
  • If your hat gets fully saturated by rain or snow, unfold the sweatband from the interior and hang the hat on a hook or a hat stand in a well ventilated place to dry. Do not use any heat source or the sun to dry your hat, it will shrink.
  • In some cases you may use a fine grit sandpaper to remove dirt or stains (320 grit), do this very gently.
